RENA, The African Wonder Woman,

Rena Wakama, the head coach of the Nigerian women’s basketball team “D’Tigress”, is a former professional basketball player and current basketball coach.

Prior to that, she worked for two years as the director of women’s basketball operations at Manhattan College while also serving as an assistant coach.
Prior to becoming a coach, Rena played basketball professionally for the Senior Nigerian National Team, the FIBA African Basketball League, and the United Kingdom.

After a challenging 2022, the Nigerian women’s basketball team “D’Tigress” required a significant overhaul.

They were expelled from the FIBA World Cup 2022 in Australia as a result of the Federal Government’s ban on them.

Due to the problem, their coach Otis Hughley resigned, and some of the important players left.

Up until they hired a 31-year-old Nigerian lady as the coach, everything looked bleak.

On June 30, 2023, Rena Wakama, a 31-year-old Nigerian living in the US and a native of Rivers State, was chosen to lead the D’Tigress.

Otis Hughley‘s replacement, Rena, a former basketball player who competed for the D’Tigress and played professionally in the UK, had enormous shoes to fill.

In 2017, 2019 and 2021, D’Tigress won the championship three times in a row.

Before facing the Senegalese team, who were seeking retribution for losing to Nigeria in 2019, they destroyed every team that stood in their way.

Coach Rena was in tears after her team, the Rena Wakama-led D’Tigress, defeated Senegal 84-74 to win Nigeria’s fourth consecutive championship.

Rena Wakama’s Biography

Rena Wakama, who was born on April 11th, 1992. She is from Rivers State in southern Nigeria.
Rena Wakama earned an MBA from Manhattan and a degree in therapeutic recreation from Western Carolina.
Prior to that, Rena spent two years as the director of women’s basketball operations at Manhattan College and worked as an assistant coach there.
