Journalist Bayo Onanuga was born in Nigeria on June 20, 1957. In May 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria. He co-founded TheNews Magazine. Prior to that, he served as the publisher and CEO of the magazines TheNEWS and PM News.
In Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Onanuga was born to the Anikilaya Ruling House dynasty. He began his studies in 1962 at the Moslem Primary School in Ijebu-Ode. After that, he attended Muslim College in Ijebu Ode, where he earned a Grade One in 1974.
Between 1975 and 1977, he attended Federal Government College, Odogbolu for his A-Levels after short worked for a year.
In September 1977, he was accepted to the University of Lagos to pursue a degree in mass communication. He received a second class upper in 1980.
Early in 1982, Onanuga worked for Practions Partners. In June of that same year, she became a founding member of the Ogun State Television staff.
He relocated to The Guardian in Lagos in July 1983 to work as a subeditor and quit after only 17 months to launch Weekly Titbits.
Onanuga joined the National Concord as senior features writer in January 1985 after the attempt failed. Later, his assistance was shifted to the African Concord publication. The magazine’s international editor in 1989 was Onanuga, who was stationed in London. Later on in the year, he was made editor.
However, Onanuga left Concord in April 1992 after refusing to apologize to General Ibrahim Babangida for a cover story titled “Has Babangida Given Up?” The junta shut down the Concord Group as a result of the article.
In order to launch TheNews Magazine, Onanuga collaborated with Seye Kehinde, owner of City People Magazine, Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of Premium Times, Sani Kabir, later Sarki of Hausawa in Ebute Meta, Idowu Obasa, chairman of Onigbongbo local government in Ikeja, Babafemi Ojudu, senator in Ekiti, and Kunle Ajibade.
Following the military government’s closure of TheNEWS, the group launched TEMPO magazine and later P.M.NEWS in 1994.
Onanuga announced in 2014 that he would run for a senate seat in the Ogun East district in the 2015 general election on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket. He was briefly imprisoned by the State Security Service in Lagos during Sani Abacha’s military rule, but he later broke free, fled the nation, and came back in 1998 following Abacha’s death.
A story shared on twitter by a user whose handle is @PIDOMNIGERIA asserted that Bayo Onanuga with the twitter handle @aonanuga1956 is a desperate thief. Between 2016 and 2019, while serving as MD of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he exploited the NAN Bizcom Accounts Access Bank 0016628258 & Zenith Bank 1012782058 to steal government funds and put them in his own pocket. @officialEFCC should investigate.
He sold off official NAN vehicles through a shady auction process that was against FGN Financial regulations, to himself and some of the corrupt management employees of the organization.
Due to his high level of corruption, unions under his agency had to petition the FG and include the EFCC.These unions include the Radio Television Theatre and Art Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation & Govt Owned Companies (SSACGOC).
They all charged Bayo Onanuga with open theft, misappropriation of government and agency finances, high levels of corruption, haughtiness, and a lack of fundamental skills needed to run an organization. Nigerians can still conduct their own research because these unions are still in existence. Remember that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu proposed Bayo Onanuga @aonanuga1956 for the position of Managing Director (MD) of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He is battling unjustly for him because of this.
Bayo Onanuga transferred the funds NAN received during their 40th anniversary into his own pocket without providing a justification or adequate justification up to this point. There are hundreds of millions of Nigerian Naira at stake. Nigerians can visit and check.
In his capacity as MD of NAN, he embezzled funds intended for the payment of rent for state zonal offices, leaving them unable to pay rent for the offices in Taraba, Bayelsa Kebbi, Rivers State, Nasarawa, and other states. They were instructed to leave.
despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s approval and distribution to Bayo Onanuga of a 321 million naira bailout fund.
The agency even produced IGR totaling over 400 million naira. But the persistent thief ended up with all of that money. His track record was so poor that his reappointment had to be fought.
Toyin Olamide Machado and Bayo Onanuga have a lovely child together, and they are happily married. Now, Toyin uses Onanuga as her last name.
