Alex Otti Biography

Alex Chioma Otti was born on the 18th of February, 1965. He is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist and politician from the Igbo tribe. Otti is currently the governor-elect of Abia State, Nigeria.

He is a former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc which is a private financial institution in Nigeria. Alex Otti was a candidate for governor of Abia on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform.

On December 31, 2015, Owerri’s Court of Appeal ruled that People’s Democratic Party member Okezie Ikpeazu has been dismissed as governor of Abia, he declared Ottie the winner of the April 11th and April 25th gubernatorial election. On February 3rd 2016, the Nigerian Supreme Court reversed the Court of Appeals decision and upheld Ikpeazu’s election as governor.

Otti is a member of Thisday’s editorial board and writes a column called “Outside the Box” every two weeks.

Alex Otti hailsfrom Isiala-ngwa. He was also elected Governor of Abia State after the February 18th, 2023 election.

Early life and education

Alex Otti was born into the family of the late pastor and his wife: Lazarus Weze Otti in Umuru, Umuehim village in Ehi Na Uguru Ancient Kingdom, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State.

Dr. Alex Otti received his secondary education at Ngwa High School, Aba and Secondary Technical School, Okpuala Ngwa, Abia, where he was among the top of his class in the school certification exams. He then proceeded to University of Port Harcourt for his tertiary education, graduating in 1988 with an honors degree in Economics. While studying at Port Harcourt University, Alex Otti not only graduated as the best student in the social sciences department, but also stood out as the best overall graduate of the year. In college, Alex Otti not only excelled academically, but also proved his skills in a variety of roles, including the position of news editor for the school’s newsletter Uniport Mirror.

He also served as Treasurer of the Nigerian Economic Students Association (NESA) University Association in 1986 and became its President the following year.
Otti received his MBA from the University of Lagos in 1994. He has attended various international courses including executive development programs at Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania). He also completed an executive program at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

Career

Alex Otti began his banking career in 1989 at Nigeria International Bank, a subsidiary of Citibank New York, working in the operations department. He then moved to what was then Nigeria Intercontinental Merchant Bank. At Intercontinental Bank, he worked in both Treasury and Financial Services and Corporate Banking.
In 1992, Alex Otti joined Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of SBA Paris, where he was promoted to Senior Manager.

He then joined United Bank for Africa (UBA) as Principal Manager, managing the Bank’s Corporate affairs across the South Division. He oversaw the banking division and was responsible for the growth of the Bank’s oil and gas business. Due to his excellent performance, he was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2000.
In May 2001, he joined First Bank of Nigeria PLC as Assistant General Manager, solely responsible for the expansion of the bank’s energy division.

In April 2004 he was promoted to Deputy General Manager and a year later he was appointed Executive Director of the Commercial Banking Division. He was then reappointed as the Director General of the Southern Directorate, where he was responsible for over 140 branches in the South-South and Southeast geopolitical zones of the country.

In March 2011, Alex Otti left First Bank and joined Diamond Bank as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, leading the bank through a major transformation.

As a graduate of the prestigious Harvard Business School, Alex has taken a variety of international courses including Executive Development Program at Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School and Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania). A

lex Otti is highly regarded for his wealth of knowledge and has served on the boards of several companies and two major Nigerian universities. He received an Honorary Doctorate (D.Sc.) from Babcock College in 2009 and Port Harcourt University in 2012.

On October 24, 2014, Alex Otti voluntarily retired and Uzoma Dozie became the new GMD and bank CEO of Diamond Bank.

He resigned from Diamond Bank and took up the post of Governorship candidate of Abia State under the APGA platform.
